About This Experience

Wild Kiwi Encounter Embark on an unforgettable journey into the wild landscapes of Rakiura Stewart Island as day turns to night in search of the elusive Southern …

Who It Suits and What to Know

RealNZ’s evening kiwi encounter leaves Oban’s main wharf about an hour and a half before nightfall, cruises among the islands, then lands a small group for a guided walk through coastal forest and along a beach where Rakiura tokoeka feed. About 4 hours, rated 4.8 from 205 reviews. It runs from October to April.

Who it suits: anyone 15 or older who wants a kiwi in the wild and has a bed booked on the island that night. Who should look elsewhere: families with younger children, wheelchair users and anyone who cannot walk 1.5 km on uneven ground; a nocturnal house such as Kiwi Park in Queenstown suits them better.

What to know before you book:

  • Not included. The ferry or flight to Stewart Island, and your accommodation: the boat comes back to Oban late at night.
  • Included. The return cruise, a specialist nature guide, a torch, and cocoa, tea or coffee with biscuits.
  • Group. Limited to 10 on the listing; RealNZ splits a night’s guests into two guided groups.
  • No guarantee. Kiwi are wild. RealNZ gives no refund for a night without one and donates to pest control instead. If it cancels for weather, you choose a refund or another date.
  • Bring. Warm, quiet layers, rain gear, hiking shoes and insect repellent. No flash photography.

The price is from US$152 a person (checked October 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Kiwi spotting on Stewart Island explains the night and the odds.
