Stewart Island From Queenstown

Stewart Island from Queenstown: the drive to Bluff, coaches, RealNZ's flying day trip, and how to fit Te Anau, Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound into the same southern trip (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

From Queenstown, Stewart Island is about a 3-hour drive to Bluff (RealNZ gives 3 hours 5 minutes) and then an hour on the ferry, so it is a trip of at least two days with a night in Oban, and longer if you see Fiordland on the way. The reason most people make it is the wild kiwi: RealNZ’s evening walk from Oban, from US$152 a person (checked October 2026), runs from October to April. A one-day version exists only by air.

Queenstown to Bluff is about 3 hours 5 minutes by car (RealNZ); the ferry to Oban takes about an hour. Te Anau and the fiords are a detour west.

Three ways to do it

Drive and stay. Drive to Bluff, leave the car at the terminal’s paid car park, and take the ferry. RealNZ’s ferry leaves Bluff at 9:15 and 17:30, with an extra 14:00 sailing from 1 December 2026 (indicative); from Queenstown the afternoon boats are the realistic ones on the day you leave. Stay at least one night for the kiwi walk, two if you also want Ulva Island in the morning light. The ferry guide has the parking and timetable.

Coach and ferry. The Stewart Island Promotion Association lists coach connections to Invercargill from Queenstown, Te Anau, Dunedin and Christchurch, and RealNZ’s coach meets every ferry between Invercargill and Bluff.

Fly for the day. RealNZ sells a Stewart Island Day Trip from Queenstown: return scenic flights with the Ulva Island and Village and Bays tours, a full day, from NZ$1,091, booked by phone (RealNZ, October 2026). It does not include the kiwi night, which starts after dark.

Adding Fiordland

The road south from Queenstown passes close enough to Fiordland that many people combine the two, and the order that works is Fiordland first, then the coast.

  • Te Anau. The lake town for Milford and Doubtful Sound, and for the glowworm caves across Lake Te Anau by boat; te-anau-glowworm-caves.com covers the cave tour, its times and tickets.
  • Milford Sound. The best-known fiord, by road from Te Anau or Queenstown, or by air. For choosing a cruise, milfordcruises.com compares them.
  • Doubtful Sound. Quieter and larger, reached from Manapouri by boat across the lake and over Wilmot Pass; doubtfulsoundcruise.com weighs a day cruise against an overnight.

From Te Anau, the road to Invercargill and Bluff completes the loop, and the island is the last stop before the long drive back north.

A sample week in the south

  1. Queenstown to Te Anau. Drive west; the glowworm caves in the evening.
  2. Milford or Doubtful Sound. A day on the water from Te Anau or Manapouri.
  3. Te Anau to Bluff. The drive south and the afternoon or evening ferry to Oban.
  4. Stewart Island. Ulva Island in the morning, the kiwi walk at night (October to April).
  5. Stewart Island. A spare day for the weather, the Rakiura Track’s day sections or the Village and Bays tour, and the dark sky after midnight in summer.
  6. Back to the mainland. The morning ferry, then north.

The spare day on the island is not padding: kiwi nights and ferries both depend on the weather, and a second night gives you a second chance.
